YES was commissioned to carry out a phased contamination risk assessment for decommissioning underground aviation fuel tanks.
Working closely with the Specialist Contractor; LCM Environmental Ltd we moved the tanks under controlled conditions. Air quality monitoring and soil sampling was carried out throughout the removal of the tanks.
Fuel contamination was present with the impacted soil being removed off site as hazardous waste. The extent of the contamination plume was revealed and removed off site. The tank voids were backfilled with clean excess arisings and imported hardcore material.
A detailed contamination risk assessment showed that the fuel concentrations which remained in-situ post tank removal were not a significant harm to human health or the water environment.
